my vision

The work of Heidy Sumei Chuang invites the viewer into a healing space of wonder. Her vision begins in a garden, where flowers and leaves reveal the story of the earth’s awakening and beauty. Her blossoms inhabit a quiet garden space where she discovers why she paints. Revealing the spaces between leaves, petals, and branches on paper is the poetry that captures her imagination. Chuang expresses poetic attentiveness by translating floral shapes and edges into forms and lines. When she begins a new piece, she first encounters the raw materials of painting. Her deep respect for materials informs her creative process. Chuang notices the paper’s texture, the fibers of her brushes, the water’s fluidity, and the saturated pigments of her paints. She primarily paints with colors extracted from rocks and minerals, elements of the earth. Like the minerals, her brushwork unveils and releases the essence of her subject. These paintings express the fragility of something elemental to the human heart: a yearning for the ineffable.
Heidy is a Taiwanese-American artist working in floral design and painting. She holds a BFA from Washington University, an MFA from Boston University, and studied in Orvieto, Italy. Her work has shown at Blooming Resilience, Waterfall Gallery and Bergdorf Goodman in NYC, and Gordon Conwell in Italy. Solo exhibitions include the Butterfly Project (L’Abri, MA), Butterflies of A Rocha (France), and Diary of Israel’s Beauty (NYC). She has been Artist Resident at A Rocha France, taught at L’Abri (Switzerland), and received the Y. Chang Art Award (Paris). Her floral work has appeared in Architectural Digest, Harvard Art Museum, and the Boston Public Library.
Heidy’s passion as an artist is to create a unique space for the environmental conservation movement, where small things are dignified, death is surpassed by rebirth, and vulnerability reveals an unexpected strength. Her work invites us to pause and notice the intrinsic artistry and wonder of creation, and the ‘why’ behind our care of creation. Her collections span mountaintops, urban streets, and quiet gardens, capturing the poetry and ineffable beauty that surrounds us and highlighting our planet’s wondrous yet vulnerable habitats and species.
